The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Willis Geral Laney (NSN: 0-112414), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as a Section Leader of a group of Fighter Planes in Fighting Squadron EIGHTY-FOUR (VF-84), attached to the U.S.S. BUNKER HILL (CV-17), during operations against enemy Japanese forces over Japan, 25 February 1945. Participating in a fighter sweep against the Tokyo Area, Lieutenant Laney damaged one enemy plane in the air, exploded another enemy on the tail of a friendly plane, and hit a third which went through the clouds trailing heavy black smoke. Shortly thereafter he shot down another enemy fighter which was on the tail of one of his teammates. His airmanship and courage reflects the highest credit upon Lieutenant Laney and the United States Naval Service.
