(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Eldred O. Hennigan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Cisterna, Italy, on 23 May 1944 in Italy. Sergeant Hennigan was knocked unconscious by an enemy shell while extricating his assistant driver from a burning bulldozer, but recovered, tried to evacuate the wounded man, and with a knife, killed a German soldier who attempted to capture him. Sergeant Hennigan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
