Carpenter, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Gunner Officer aboard the U.S.S. Colorado, in the Philippine Islands and Ryukyu Islands from 19 November 1944 to 22 May 1945.
