(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Kyle Burditt, United States Navy, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Forward Operating Base Kala Gush, Afghanistan, on 3 May 2010. On that date, Lieutenant Burditt rushed to a helicopter that crashed while landing at his Forward Operating Base. He saw that the helicopter had rolled onto one side, was leaking fuel and ammunition and high explosive mortar rounds from the helicopter’s cargo were strewn across the crash area. The engines were still running and the rotorhead with ragged broken rotor blades was still turning violently causing the wreckage to shake. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Burditt helped to extricate two of the injured members of the crew. His selfless act of heroism led to the injured crew’s survival. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Lieutenant Burditt reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army and Navy.
