Riedel, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Patrol Plane Commander of a Catalina amphibian plane, during a night photo-reconnaissance bombing mission from the Aleutian Base to Northern Kurile Islands on 20 December 1943.
