Howland, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander of a land-based plane in Patrol Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FOUR (VPB-124), off the coast of Kyushu, Japan, on 26 June 1945.
