Rudolph Van Dyke became a World War II Navy ACE, credited with shooting down five enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He died on June 1, 1953, from injuries he received in an air accident at NAS Alameda, California.

His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
