    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Chief Boatswain’s Mate Joseph A. McGrane, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in supervising rigging of the ship when the U.S.S. BIRMINGHAM (CL-62), towed the U.S.S. PRINCETON, when the latter was damaged severely by magazine explosions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
