King, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) for heroic conduct when he detected a 5-inch projectile’s fuse smoking aboard the U.S.S. BARTON (DD-599), on 29 March 1945. Gunner King attempted to throw it overboard when the fuse exploded, killing him.
