(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant William George Hause (ASN: 6995198), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the Solomon Islands, on 23 July 1943. Staff Sergeant Hause sacrificed his life in a brave attempt to rescue a comrade who had been wounded when his squad was ambushed by a Japanese patrol. He unhesitatingly exposed himself to enemy machine-gun fire in his persistent effort to reach the soldier. Determined to finish his hazardous task, Staff Sergeant Hause secured a litter and boldly crawled forward to carry his comrade out of the line of fire. As he raised himself to lift the litter over a log, he was struck and mortally wounded by machine-gun fire. Staff Sergeant Hause’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
