Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 88 (May 26, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Leroy Anson Haselwood (ASN: 0-354715), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Majorano, Italy, on 18 October 1943. Captain Haselwood, Battalion Operations Officer, entered the town in an effort to locate and direct artillery fire on an enemy tank which, with support of a large body of enemy infantry, had temporarily halted the advance of the battalion. Close-range machine gun fire barely missed him, But Captain Haselwood nevertheless advanced 400 yards to a building where he established an observation post, attempting to adjust fire on the enemy tank. Although he provided a constant target, Captain Haselwood remained in an exposed position and continued his efforts for three hours. Because of the defiladed position, the enemy vehicle could not be reached by artillery and the captain retired from his observation post at dusk. Determined to eliminate the obstacle to his battalion’s advance, he located a bazooka crew and six riflemen and turned an assault group against the tank. When within 50 yards of the objective, an enemy rifleman 20 yards distant opened fire. Captain Haselwood calmly dropped to one knee and shot the German with his carbine. This drew fire from seven hostile automatic weapons and Captain Haselwood fell, fatally wounded. Despite his wounds and the massed automatic fire, he maneuvered his assault group so effectively that the tank was disabled in the ensuing fight. Captain Haselwood’s courageous determination and inspiring leadership enabled the removal of this obstacle to his battalion’s progress. His personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
