Smith, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot in a Division of Fighting Squadron FIFTY (VF-50), with carrier task groups in the vicinity of the Volcano Islands on 24 June 1944.
