The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Randall J. Harris (ASN: 20705565), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 1st Ranger Battalion (Separate), in action against enemy forces at Licata, Sicily, on 10 July 1943. Acting as First Sergeant, Harris landed with his Ranger Battalion on the Island of Sicily on the morning of 10 July 1943. Himself severely wounded in the beach landing and finding his company’s officers either killed or wounded, First Sergeant Harris at once took command, reorganized the men and led them one and one-half miles to the designated objective and, having reached this point, directed and aided in the destruction of an enemy pillbox. The devotion to duty displayed by First Sergeant Harris, the spirit of self-sacrifice evidenced by his refusal to accept first aid treatment before his men had received medical care, his presence of mind, leadership and courage in the face of enemy fire, reflect the highest traditions of the service and are deserving of the highest praise.
