(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] John Umstead, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during an enemy aerial attack at Bari, Italy, on 2 December 1943. Lieutenant Umstead skillfully maneuvered the U.S.S. Aroostook (AOG-14), through the channel to safer anchorage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
