Gunnels, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in Fighting Bombing Squadron EIGHTY-SEVEN, (VFB-87), embarked in U.S.S. TICONDEROTA over Kure Naval Base on 28 July 1945.
