Harrington (ASN: 19124328), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 7th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Kwajalein, on 2 February 1944. On the second afternoon of his unit’s operations in the Marshall Islands, Private First Class Harrington’s company ran into to heavy fire from enemy pillboxes. There were six or more Japanese soldiers in each pillbox and they pinned the advancing Americans down in an area which was dug up by shell fire, crisscrossed with trenches, and covered by their fire. Under covering fire from his comrades, Private First Class Harrington, a flame-thrower operator, moved through the trenches and dodged from shellhole to shellhole to move within range of two enemy pillboxes where, despite being shot in the neck, he destroyed them both. Private First Class Harrington’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
