Reed, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Naval Liaison Officer for Jicame, Aegean area, from 10 October to 28 November 1943; service aboard the British Cruiser H.M.S. SIRIUS in the Aegean, on 17 October 1943; and later, by means of small craft, he supplied and evacuated the British garrison on Leros Island in the Aegean.
