When two Japanese officers and four enlisted men raided a company command post where Private First Class Hansen and nine other men were spending the night, all ten men were wounded before they had a chance to defend themselves. Private First Class Hansen’s left hand was severed by a Japanese officer’s saber, who also slashed him across the stomach. Only Private First Class Hansen and one other soldier were able to fire, his comrade killing one enemy. Private First Class Hansen grabbed the carbine in his right hand and fired three magazines, reloading with the aid of the bleeding stump of his arm. He killed two of the Japanese and wounded two others, one of whom shortly thereafter committed suicide. He then calmly waited in a foxhole until dawn, and then walked nearly two miles to a first aid station carrying his severed hand. Private First Class Hansen’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 41st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
