The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Albert Hansen (ASN: 36461276), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 May 1945. When the enemy attempted to infiltrate through the perimeter of the Command Post of Company K, 148th Infantry Regiment, in the early hours of morning, one of the Japanese threw a hand grenade which landed in a foxhole occupied by Private First Class Hansen and two other members of his platoon. Observing the grenade land, he quickly stepped on it with his left foot and forced it into the ground. With certain knowledge that is was about to explode under him, he courageously remained standing on the grenade until it blew up a few seconds later. The top and side of his foot were destroyed by the blast, but he protected his comrades from injury. Through his gallant action at the risk of his own life, Private First Class Hansen saved his fellow soldiers from death or serious injury and set an inspiring example of bravery to all members of the command. Private First Class Hansen’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
