Knowles, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Head of the anti-submarine section from 10 July 1942 to 1 July 1943 and later as head of Atlantic section, Combat Intelligence Division of the Headquarters of Commander in Chief, United States Fleet, from 1 July 1943 to 12 June 1945.
