Mendel, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Instruction and Officer-in-Charge of the Naval ACI School, Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island, from April 1942 to 31 August 1945.
