The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) John W. Hall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of a Company of the 60th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 18 December, 1944, at Haller, Luxembourg. Captain Hall single-handedly assaulted a rocket position and killed the gunner after being knocked from atop his tank by the concussion of the rocket. Then he directed assault gun fire which destroyed one of two enemy machine guns, and led a charge upon the other, eliminating the entire gun crew. His heroism cleared an area for passage of a large armored force. Captain Hall’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
