Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 89 (December 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Earl Orine Hall (ASN: 0-1317292), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Hill 88, near Brest, France, on 25 and 26 August 1944. Completely exposed to intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, Second Lieutenant Hall advanced far in front of his troops and personally directed the fire of a tank upon several enemy machine gun positions. On the following day, he boldly entered a concrete emplacement known to contain five Germans and single-handedly forced their surrender. Although wounded during this action, he refused medical attention and courageously led his men in bitter hand-to-hand fighting for possession of trenches and concrete positions. Disregarding heavy enemy fire falling about him, he heroically moved among his men, aiding and encouraging them. During this engagement, Second Lieutenant Hall was killed by enemy artillery fire. By his indomitable leadership, gallantry and unflinching devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Hall acted in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces.
