(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) William Thomas Haley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Officer with the 102d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 102d Cavalry Group (Separate), in action against enemy forces on 25 August 1944. On the outskirts of Paris, France, his squadron was engaged in a fierce fight with the enemy. Disregarding his own safety and armed only with a white flag and his medical kit, he walked onto the “no man’s land” and began attending to the wounded. He then marched straight to the German line, and demanded to speak to the commanding officer, with whom he worked out a deal – he would be allowed to remove the injured U.S. soldiers for treatment, and in return he would attend to the wounded Germans. The bargain was struck, the wounded were removed, and the battle resumed. Captain Haley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
