The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunner’s Mate Third Class Jay Vee Fried (NSN: 9640491), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity In action as a crew member attached to Motor Torpedo Boat THREE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIVE (PT-335), when that vessel was subjected to intense barrage fire from enemy shore installations while looking for targets of opportunity off Bongao Island, Tawi Tawi, in the Sulu Archipelago, on 25 March 1945. Struck by an enemy fragment while firing his weapon at hostile shore batteries, Petty Officer Fried remained steadfast at his battle station in the .50 caliber gun turret, heroically continuing to fire until he collapsed. Succumbing shortly afterwards to his wound, Petty Officer Fried by his selfless conduct and indomitable courage had inspired all those with whom he served and his loyal, unfaltering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
