(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Edward Gulsvick (ASN: 37276019), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate), in action against enemy forces in the Philippine Islands, on 16 February 1945. On that day, Staff Sergeant Gulsvick’s unit was in action against Japanese forces when the 503rd jumped on Fortress Corregidor (“the Rock”), Philippines, to liberate that Island from the occupying Japanese forces. Staff Sergeant Gulsvick was jump master of a stick of 7 paratroopers from Company E and several of his men landed short of their landing zone. As jump master, Staff Sergeant Gulsvick was the first in the stick to jump and landed among the Japanese troops, and directly in the field of fire of 2 enemy machine guns. Several Japanese troops were there using their bayonets to spear the men as they landed. Although Staff Sergeant Gulsvick was wounded in the air during the jump, he fought ferociously with his submachine gun, killing 14 Japanese. During this first day of the Battle for the recapture of Corregidor, under intense gun fire the paratroopers rushed forward and overcame the heavy blockhouse defenses, dropping explosives into embrasures to kill hidden Japanese gunners. Staff Sergeant Gulsvick’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, resulted in the saving of numerous lives and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
