Van Benschoten, United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander of a Patrol Plane over the Solomon Islands and Bismarck Archipelago areas from 20 August 1943 to 19 March 1944; and over Choiseul Island on 25 September 1944.
