Gesen, United States Naval Reserve, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Navigator of the U.S.S. PHILADELPHIA during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 and Italy, September 1943.
