(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Seaman First Class Virgil E. Van Camp, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a member of the crew of a Navy Patrol Bomber assigned to attack Marcus Island at low level in daylight on 9 May 1945. He skillfully and courageously performed his duties during the attack in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from gun emplacements and rifle fire from troops, which repeatedly hit his plane. In addition he assisted in the destruction of enemy aircraft, strafing and bombing installations, causing widespread damage, and inflicted severe casualties on enemy troops. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
