The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Harry Gubino (ASN: 33842010), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 335th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 January 1945 in Germany. When the attack of his company on a German-held town was temporarily halted by enemy machine gun and automatic weapons fire, Private First Class Gubino courageously carried a radio through the intense fire to his platoon leader, enabling him to direct artillery and mortar fire on the enemy positions. Later, after killing the operator of an automatic rifle, he placed fire on an enemy machine gun position which was then destroyed by his platoon. Entering the town with his unit, he captured seventeen Germans and arranged for the evacuation of casualties. Private First Class Gubino’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 84th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
