The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Stanley Grzesik (ASN: 12022868), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at ***, Algeria, North Africa, on 8 November 1942. Private First Class Grzesik, of his own volition, and disregarding his own safety, crossed a field of machine gun fire and rescued a comrade who had been wounded by enemy machine gun fire. Private First Class Grzesik pulled his comrade down the side of an embankment where he administered first aid. When mortar and artillery shells fell within ten yards of their position, he further protected his comrade by covering his comrade’s body with his own body.
