The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) John Edwin Grose, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters, I Corps, while in temporary command of the 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 2 January 1943, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. Colonel Grose made a personal reconnaissance of his sector of the American lines near Buna, just prior to the final and successful attack on a deeply entrenched and important enemy position. His route was through open areas known to be covered by enemy automatic and sniper fire. Later, from the forward command post of the attacking battalion, he gave personal direction to the attack. When the commander of the battalion became a casualty, Colonel Grose assumed command until the action was finished. Colonel Grose’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the I Corps, and the United States Army.
