Merritt, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Officer of the Deck aboard the U.S.S. PETROF BAY (CVE-80), in the Battle for Leyte Gulf, on 25 October 1944.
