Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 139 (June 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class William E. Grim (ASN: 37414603), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Manila, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1945. During street fighting an infantry platoon was halted by intense fire from two heavily-fortified pillboxes occupied by enemy gunners and riflemen. Private First Class Grim volunteered to attack and destroy the pillboxes while his comrades took shelter in a nearby building. With complete disregard for his own safety he set up a rocket gun in the middle of the street, took deliberate aim and destroyed the first pillbox. Private First Class Grim then dashed for cover, reloaded his rocket gun and repeated the performance with the second pillbox. Private First Class Grim’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
