The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Billie Nat Grice, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 20th Engineer Combat Regiment (Separate), SEVENTH U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces at Bizerte, Tunisia, on 8 May 1943. Sergeant Grice was leading a patrol searching for snipers. Coming under machine gun fire, he deployed his patrol and advanced on the enemy. Additional enemy weapons too up the fire, including 20-mm. guns located in a stone tower about 150 yards distant across a channel. Since further advance was impractical at the moment, Sergeant Grice withdrew his patrol to cover. This accomplished, he crossed a hundred yards of ground swept by fire to enlist the aid of an M-3 tank. Through his skillful direction, the tank knocked out one of the 20-mm. guns and induced the other enemy weapons to cease fire. Sergeant Grice’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
