Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 337 (April 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class Wendell Marvin Vaughn, United States Navy, for heroism as a member of a Naval Combat Demolition unit which landed on the beach at H/3 minutes on D-Day during the assault on Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Seaman First Class Vaughn performed all duties assigned to him in an expeditious manner until high tide made further work impossible and his unit was secured. Rather than seek cover, he took a first aid kit from the body f a deceased first-aid man and remained on the beach tending casualties until low tide and the resumption of demolition of enemy beach obstacles by his unit. Seaman First Class Vaughn’s first-aid assistance was of utmost importance because of the number of wounded during the initial hours of D-Day. The courage and decisive action displayed by Seaman First Class Vaughn on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
