The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] Millard Glen Gray, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Aide de Camp, Headquarters, I Corps, in action against enemy forces from 25 December 1942 to 1 January 1943, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. Learning of a shortage of company commanders, Major Gray, during an inspection of the front lines volunteered to lead one of the companies engaged. After making several reconnaissances at great personal risk, he took command of Company C, 1st Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, which had been pinned down and disorganized by enemy fire. Although suffering from malaria, he restored morale by his fearless personal example and led the company in a successful attack which obtained its objective, despite heavy crossfire from enemy automatic weapons. Major Gray’s voluntary and courageous conduct in leading his company in battle was a valuable contribution to the success of the operation. Major Gray’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the I Corps, ADC, and the United States Army.
