Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 336 (March 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Torpedoman’s Mate Eugene Freaner, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. While serving as Chief of the Boat and Chief Petty Officer-in-Charge of the control room, his courageous, cool and competent manner inspired and heartened the crew of his vessel. His submarine sank or damaged many thousands of tons of Japanese shipping. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
