The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Joseph R. Ruwitch, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as First Lieutenant of a Tank Landing Ship (LST) during operations at Vella Lavella during World War II. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Ruwitch daringly led the fire and mooring party alongside another tank landing ship which was burning fiercely. Despite exploding gasoline and ammunition he led a party to the tank deck and battled the flames until forced to man the guns against a second Japanese air attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
