The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Jack H. Stewart, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight as pilot of a United States Navy fighter plane in offensive action against an enemy submarine on 11 August 1943. When he sighted an enemy submarine through a break in the clouds Ensign Stewart immediately pointed out the submarine to the pilot of the accompanying bomber, and with complete disregard for his own safety, came in to the attack at full throttle, holding his machine gun fire until he was within four hundred yards of the submarine. He concentrated his fire on the conning tower causing several explosions just aft of the structure. Immediately after the bombing attack, Ensign Stewart made another damaging strafing attack which resulted in minor explosions in the vicinity of the conning tower as the submarine submerged. His vigilance, courage, imitative and good judgment in executing these attacks were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Jack H. Stewart, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a Fighter Plane during action against an enemy submarine in the Atlantic. Lieutenant Frederick M. Rountree and Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Jack H. Stewart, in company with a bombing plane, skillfully delivered bold strafing attacks in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire. They raked the conning tower and gun positions, silencing enemy fire and enabling the bomber to hit the rapidly submerging vessel, resulting in her probable destruction. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
