Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 336 (March 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Frederick M. Rountree, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a Fighter Plane during action against an enemy submarine in the Atlantic. Lieutenant Frederick M. Rountree and Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Jack H. Stewart, in company with a bombing plane, skillfully delivered bold strafing attacks in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire. They raked the conning tower and gun positions, silencing enemy fire and enabling the bomber to hit the rapidly submerging vessel, resulting in her probable destruction. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
