(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain William Price Oliver Clarke, United States Navy, was awarded a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Staff or a Commander of an Amphibious Force at Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands and at Okinawa, from 25 October 1944 to 11 August 1945.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain William Price Oliver Clarke, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as commander landing craft group of the Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, prior to major amphibious operations during World War II. Captain Clarke was charged with the assignment of officers and men for all new types of landing craft and was instrumental in bringing the various ships and craft into a high state of combat efficiency, enabling them to participate effectively in all subsequent landing operations in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean theaters of war.
