The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Fireman First Class John J. Dunlap, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct when the U.S.S. SWERVE, to which he was attached, sank off Anzio, 9 July 1944. Fireman First Class Dunlap, although seriously wounded, remained aboard trying to control damage and extinguish fires. Finally, forced to abandon ship, he was rescued by a nearby craft but then jumped back into the water to carry a line from the rescue ship to a raft carrying other wounded survivors.
