The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Coxswain Warren Hunter, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while beaching in the Gull of Salerno to discharge vital cargo during the invasion of Italy in 1944. Although his LST was subjected twice to heavy enemy shellfire and bombing attacks, Coxswain Hunter steadfastly maintained an exposed position at the elevator controls and skillfully assisted in the unloading of supplies. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
