The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain William S. Campbell, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. ANNE ARUNDEL (AP-76), prior to and during the invasion of southern France in 1944. Captain Campbell brought his ship through prescribed routes to the proper unloading point and expeditiously carried out the vital disembarkation at the scheduled time. His able conduct of this task contributed materially to the effective establishment of the beachhead and to the overall success of the invasion.
