The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Electrician’s Mate Second Class Edgar P. Lesperance, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action when his ship, the U.S.S. SKILL (AM-115) was sunk in the Gulf of Salerno on 25 September 1943. Electrician’s Mate Second Class Lesperance remained at his station in the after engine room and immediately went to the assistance of an unconscious man, carrying him up the ladder to safety. He then entered a flaming compartment to rescue another shipmate and, throughout the remaining period of time, rendered all possible aid to others, contributing materially to the probable saving of many lives. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
