Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 334 (January 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Edward Kahan, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as a boat wave commander attached to the U.S.S. LYON (AP-71) during the invasion of Italy in 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Kahan coolly and courageously directed the landing craft to the proper beaches under heavy gunfire. He maintained radio communication with the transport commander and kept salvage parties advised of the situation on the beaches. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
