The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Roy E. Butler, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while in command of the U.S.S. LST 3 during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. Lieutenant Butler beached his ship at San Stefano and was disembarking assault troops and unloading supplies when enemy aircraft scored a direct hit on his vessel, causing severe damage and many casualties. Throughout the following seven days he and his men worked tirelessly to save their ship and finally assured her eventual salvage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
