Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 27 (February 16, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard F. Gomes (ASN: 6576621), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 January 1942, at Abucay Hacienda in the Philippine Islands. Serving as a machine gunner during an attack on an enemy strong point and during the subsequent withdrawal of his company, Private First Class Gomes maintained the fire of his weapon even after he was wounded severely. Additional wounds did not deter him from his mission, for without thought of self, this soldier remained with his gun, firing on pursuing hostile forces long after here was any possibility of his rejoining his organization. Private First Class Gomes’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
