The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Watertender Third Class Maurice E. Redwine, United States Naval Reserve, for heroic conduct while en route to the Naval Training Station, Newport, Rhode Island, on 23 July 1944. Watertender Third Class Redwine was attracted to a burning house where two women and three children were trapped on an upper floor. He instructed the women to toss the children out of the window and, when these five were safe on the ground, rushed into the blazing house and carried out another child before collapsing from the effects of the smoke.
